Disaster Alert is a mobile app available for public use that provides critical hazard alerts and information for the global community, allowing users to stay safe anywhere in the world. Developed on PDC's DisasterAWARE platform, Disaster Alert offers near real-time updates on 18 different types of natural hazards as they occur around the globe.
With Disaster Alert, users have the ability to customize early warning alerts, view estimated impact reports, and access visualized modeled hazard data. The continuous stream of new information provided by Disaster Alert is generated automatically from reliable and scientifically verified sources. In cases where no official source is available, alerts are manually updated by the Pacific Disaster Center, ensuring only a small time lapse between the occurrence of an event and the availability of information in the system.
Disaster Alert provides updates on active hazards, which are recent incidents deemed potentially hazardous to people, property, or assets by PDC.
The hazard types included in Disaster Alert are as follows:
- Hurricanes (tropical cyclones / typhoons)
- Earthquakes
- Tsunamis
- Volcanos
- Floods
- Wildfires
- U.S. tornados
- Winter storms
In addition to these automated hazard updates, Disaster Alert also provides manual processing for marine hazards, storms, droughts, and manmade incidents. For users in Hawaii, high surf advisories, high winds, and flash floods are also available.
New features in version 7.5.4 include:
- Default theme: The PDC theme has been set as the default in Disaster Alert, incorporating DisasterAWARE branding, colors, and iconography. Users can choose different themes from the User Preferences menu.
- Multi-language login and registration: Disaster Alert now supports login and registration in a variety of languages other than English. Users can select their preferred language from a dropdown selector at the top of the form.
- Onboarding: A new first-time user setup feature has been introduced in Disaster Alert, allowing users to customize alert location and hazard severity. This screen is displayed to all users when they update to version 7.5.4 or install the app for the first time. Users have the option to sign up, log in, or skip directly to using Disaster Alert as a guest without creating an account. Alert preferences can only be customized by registered users.
- User registration email: Disaster Alert now supports additional email formats for new user registration, including plus-addressed (or sub-addressed) email formats.
Other key features of Disaster Alert include:
- Customizable alerts based on geographic area of interest and hazard severity
- Ability to view estimated impact information by activating the map tip and selecting a hazard on the interactive map
- Interactive map interface displaying 18 different types of active hazards
- Customizable background maps
